Despite all our numerous advances in dental science, there are still some instances in which a tooth can’t be repaired. Perhaps it’s due to advanced decay or even because of a traumatic facial injury, but whatever the cause, being without even a single tooth for any amount of time is something you’d probably rather avoid. Thankfully, for many patients in Pasadena, Foothill Center for Dental Implants and Oral Surgery offers immediate dental implants.
Dr. Chan explains the benefits of immediate dental implants when natural teeth cannot be saved.
Am I Eligible for Immediate Dental Implants?
As with dental implants placed on a standard schedule, there are some considerations that need to be taken into account to see if you’re a good candidate for immediate dental implants. Pasadena patients will generally have the following factors examined by Dr. Chan to determine how to proceed:
- The state of your bite
- The shape and type of gum involved
- The density and amount of existing bone
- The type and design of the implant
- The initial stability of the implant
We check these things to ensure that your implant supported tooth will have a strong foundation and not cause problems later on. Even if you aren’t a good candidate for an immediate placement, though, we have multiple options to ensure you’ll be back to normal as quickly as possible.
What Can I Expect During The Procedure?
Pasadena immediate dental implants patients can expect the following during the treatment procedure:
First, Dr. Chan will employ a special technique to remove the existing tooth or remnants thereof. This technique preserves the surrounding gum tissue and bone and allows us to achieve the optimal possible functional and esthetic result.
Immediately following removal of the damaged or decayed tooth, a dental implant is placed in the socket left behind. Bone grafting material is used to fill in completely around the implant, maintaining natural contours.
At this point, based on the recommendation of Dr. Chan, a crown may be placed immediately following the surgical procedure. If this is not possible, scan impressions may be taken instead, with your crown being placed a few days later. Alternatively, a removable retainer with an attached tooth may be recommended in the interim of a more permanent solution.
No matter what your case, our goal is to provide you with at least a temporary tooth when you leave our office. Once your implant has formed a strong bond with your existing bone structure, we’ll invite you back to receive your permanent crown that will look and function just like a normal tooth.
Benefits of Implant Supported Replacement Teeth
It’s true – there are other methods of tooth replacement such as dentures and bridges that can provide an adequate solution. They might even appear to be less expensive up front, but when you consider the cost over a lifetime of dental care, they often don’t measure up – and you can’t get them the same day!
Aside from this, though, there are a number of functional and aesthetic benefits of dental implants over other methods:
- Keeps Facial Structures Intact: The absence of teeth can cause the deterioration of underlying bone structure, but dental implants prevent this deterioration.
- Natural Look and Feel: Dental implants are made to look and function the same as your natural teeth so you can live normally and smile with confidence.
- Doesn’t Compromise Healthy Teeth: Bridges and partial dentures rely on neighboring healthy teeth for support, but over time, this can cause them to loosen and even fall out.
- Easy Oral Hygiene: Dental implants can be brushed and flossed just like normal teeth, so there’s no additional fuss for you.
Dental implants are made to last a lifetime with proper oral hygiene, whereas other methods can require replacement every 5-10 years. When you consider this, the choice for treatment is pretty clear.
