If you’re a parent navigating your child’s dental care, you’ve probably been told at some point that they’ll need their wisdom teeth removed. But how do you know when it’s actually time? Is it urgent, or something that can wait? And what should you expect from the process?

At Foothill Center for Dental Implants and Oral Surgery, we understand that wisdom teeth removal is often the first surgical experience for many young patients. That’s why Dr. Christopher Chan, a dual-degree, board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, focuses on making the process as clear, comfortable, and safe as possible for both parents and patients.

What Are Wisdom Teeth, and Why Do They Need to Come Out?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last adult teeth to emerge, typically between the ages of 16 and 25. The problem? Most jaws don’t have enough room for them. When they don’t have the space they need, wisdom teeth can:

  • Grow in at an angle or sideways
  • Become trapped (impacted) beneath the gums
  • Crowd other teeth, reversing years of orthodontic work
  • Cause neighboring teeth to develop cavities
  • Lead to infections, pain, jaw fractures, and even cyst formation

Not every case is the same, but many patients benefit from early evaluation and proactive removal, often before symptoms start.

The Best Time to Schedule Removal

We typically recommend evaluating wisdom teeth during the mid-teen years, around ages 15 to 17. Why?

  • The roots are still developing, which makes removal easier and recovery quicker
  • Younger patients heal faster and tend to have fewer complications
  • Removal can be scheduled around school breaks or summer vacation

Waiting too long can increase the chances of pain, infection, or more complex surgery. At Foothill Center for Dental Implants and Oral Surgery, we use cone beam CT imaging to evaluate the position of each tooth and determine the ideal timing for removal.

What to Expect from the Process

We know that both kids and parents can feel nervous about oral surgery. Here’s what the experience looks like in our care:

  • Personalized consultation with Dr. Chan
  • 3D imaging to evaluate positioning and root development
  • Sedation options based on your child’s comfort level, including IV sedation safely administered by Dr. Chan
  • A quick, routine procedure typically lasting about 45 minutes
  • Same-day discharge with detailed home care instructions

Most teens return to light activity the next day and resume normal routines within a few days.
