Our Pasadena office team is committed to ensuring excellent post-surgery care and maximizing your recovery time and healing process. However, since 2012, Exparel has helped over 6 million patients worldwide with pain management following their dental surgery.
At Foothill Center for Dental Implants and Oral Surgery, we pride ourselves on being opioid-free and do our part to combat the opioid epidemic our society is facing. Exparel is a non-opioid alternative that is meant to provide long-lasting pain relief following a dental procedure. It is a single dose medication that works as a nerve blocker, stopping your mouth from sending pain signals to your brain. Studies show that it provides a 46% decrease in pain when compared to a placebo. When over-the-counter medication is not sufficient, Exparel can alleviate the pain experienced post-surgery.
What Are the Benefits of Using Exparel
The principal benefit of Exparel is its longevity. Exparel can provide pain relief for several days following your dental surgery, which is when patients are most likely to be experiencing pain or discomfort as they go through the initial stages of their recovery.
Additionally, there is no need to stop by a pharmacy or worry about taking pills. Exparel is a single dose medication used locally at the surgery site, and it will be administered by one of our doctors during your procedure. Since Exparel is injected (similar to local anesthetic), there are no adverse side effects to the rest of your body that a patient may typically experience with other medicines or opioids.
Furthermore, since Exparel is given locally, patients do not run the risk of getting addicted, as is common with opioids such as oxycodone, codeine, or morphine.
Am I a Good Candidate for Exparel?
Most patients who are healthy enough to undergo dental surgery are healthy enough to receive Exparel. As always, the diligent team at Foothill Center for Dental Implants and Oral Surgery will conduct a full medical history review and exam beforehand to determine if Exparel is a good fit.
